As the state prods local government into more sharing of services between municipalities, the Davison area has found itself already one step ahead. For years the Davison area has worked together in many capacities to save money through shared services, according to officials. Those endeavors include a fire department and library funded by the three local units of government — Davison, Davison Township and Richfield Township — the Davison Area Senior Citizens Center, which is funded by the city and Davison Township; and the Davison Community Enrichment and Recreation, funded through the city, Davison Township and Davison Community Schools. A recent study done by Plante & Moran shows a number of other areas where Davison works with its neighbors and details other avenues the city and other municipalities can work together.

Fresh off losing an extra session thriller in only its second Big Nine game of the season, the Davison varsity hockey team was looking to get back on track last Saturday at Kensington Lakes Activities Association rival Lakeland. The Eagles had other plans, though, and used a pair of early mistakes to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period before the Cardinals came back to score four goals in the second and another in the third to edge out the 5-4 victory. In a contest that was every bit as exciting for the fans as it was maddening for the coaching staffs, it was Steven Stull who first got Davison on the board at 8:43 of the second on the power play with help from Steven Arterburn. Alex Dunckel then tied the game at 2-2 for the Cardinals just over two minutes later on the Bobby Crawford pass with a man advantage before Stull gave the team its first lead of the night at 5:15 on the Drew VanDeputte assist.

Compromise may be the operative word for Davison school officials as the deadline approaches for design drawings for the new intermediate school building. In a special meeting Monday, the board authorized the THA architectural firm to proceed from rough design drawings to actual construction documents. In addition to discussing minor design changes, school officials were faced with some significant decision to keep the building within its allocated budget.

With a split in the Friday, Jan. 17 dual meet at Clio with Beecher and the Mustangs, Davison Cardinals wrestling Coach Ron Whitman sees his team gaining respectability and promise. At least some of the promise was evidenced at the Saturday, Jan. 18 tournament at Holly, where Whitman took eight of his freshmen and sophomores. Jim McFall (119 pounds), Jon Phillips (130), Wayne Rousch (135). Adrian Nowalk (152) and Nic LaFear (215) came home with perfect 3-0 records and first places in their weight classes.

The Davison City Council heard a progress report and comments for and against the proposed park development in the city, Monday night; but no final decision was reached. The proposed park would cover around 100 acres joining and running south of the present city park near Genova Products and the high school. The council was told by the park board speaker Judson Davis that grant money from the state could be gotten in an amount in excess of $154,000. The land involved would cost $187,000. The board is trying to tie in a federal grant so no local money would be needed for the acquisition.

Davison basketball forces suffered their second Big Nine Conference defeat Friday night, and lost possession of a share of the Big Nine lead. The Cards had been tied for the league lead with Clio and Grand Blanc, but now find themselves one game back in second place. The Cards lost to Grand Blanc 64-59. Davison took an opening quarter 16-13 lead against the Bobcats. Steven Flemming, the Big Nine’s leading scorer, had quite a lot to do with that. Joel Dean was the only other Card to reach double figures in scoring.
