Volunteers, United Way help make For-Mar even more pleasant

Photos by Tanya Terry BURTON —On Aug. 29, over 60 volunteers helped make For-Mar an even happier place for Burton residents and visitors to the city to spend time,“I think it was outstanding,” said Nicole Ferguson, head naturalist at For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum.

“I’ve never seen people plant as quickly and move as fast as I saw that day,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said park staff would not be able to do all they do at Genesee County Parks without volunteers. “They help in the gardens, at Crossroads and to make our events special,” she said. “Volunteers are important to us at the parks.”

The United Way of Genesee County has a program called Genesee Serves. Volunteer projects are listed for the county through their organizations, including the Aug. 29 project at For-Mar.

There were four stations set up for the day and volunteers removed invasive species and planted more vegetation-friendly plants under the treehouse.

People mulched the area in the Edible Forest. In the hoop house, volunteers planted, weeded and harvested cold season vegetables to be donated to local food pantries. Other people cleared brush from the sugar bush area.

Symantha Foreman, 27, worked in the hoop house. She said in addition to planting, weeding and harvesting cold season vegetables, her group put compost in the raised beds to prepare for the cold crop season.

“I’m an AmeriCorps member,” Foreman said. “So, it’s always good to give back. This was me helping the United Way, as well as For- Mar.”
