14-year-old Bendle student charged in slashing case

BURTON — A 14-year-old year female middle school student faces felony charges following an incident that occurred May 4 at Bendle Middle School involving another 14-year-old female.

The victim was allegedly slashed in the face with a sharp object right after lunch right outside the cafeteria. Burton police were dispatched to the school. The victim suffered a serious facial wound requiring hospitalization.

A phone call went out to all parents in the school district regarding the incident.

The suspect was lodged at Genesee Valley Regional Detention Center. She was formally charged May 5 in Genesee County Probate Court on felony counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and carrying a concealed weapon with intent.

The victim is expected to be fine.

There are currently more than ten behavioral programs available to Bendle students. Neither the principal of Bendle Middle School or the district superintendent were immediately available to comment on whether additional programs or policies would be implemented following the incident.
