BURTON — Although Election Day is over, locals have a chance to vote for the best pizza in Genesee County.

Faithway Christian School, 1225 Center Rd. in Burton hosts its second annual Greater Genesee County Pizza Throwdown on Nov. 12 from 6-8 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the Faithway Christian School scholarship fund.

“Last year we earned $5,500 for the scholarship fund, and we’re hoping to reach $8,000 this year, that’s our goal,” said Jill Bogert, administrative assistant at the school.

The way the Throwdown works is that nine pizza vendors will set up stations at the school, and guests may try samples from each vendor as many times as they would like. They may only vote once, however, for their favorite pizza. Bogert said the school also has enlisted the help of six “celebrity” judges such as Dawn Jones of WJRT TV-12 who will help decide the winner of the “specialty pizza.” Awards also are handed out to the top 3 vote-getters in the Best Overall competition.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students, seniors and veterans and $25 to feed the entire family at this all-you-can eat event.

The event also features a silent auction and dessert sales. Silent auction items include Detroit Pistons tickets and signed memorabilia, hotel coupons, salon services and products, Christmas items, gift cards, stained glass, a large Detroit Red Wings Fathead sticker, and more.

“It’s a good family event,” Bogert said.

The Faithway scholarship fund helps offset the cost of tuition for families in need.
