Photo by Tara Moreno BURTON — James Kruger has loved comic books since he was a child and when the opportunity came to open his own store, he jumped on it.

The building where Battlestar Comics is located was already a comic book store for 30 years when Kruger bought on Oct. 30, 2011.

He said already having a comic book store established was “good” for business. He bought the store when the owner of the former comic book store made the offer to sell it to him.

Before opening the store Kruger knew he was to be “kid-friendly.” He has a special section that is specifically geared towards children, which probably has something to with Kruger’s childhood. His father would often take him into book stores where Kruger would get a comic and his father would get a newspaper or magazine.

Kruger’s taste in comics have been consistent since he discovered his passion as a child for this type of pop culture. Kruger made a conscious decision to focus on three main super heroes: Batman, Superman and Spiderman with his personal favorite being Batman.

To keep things interesting, he has something “new” every week whether it be a new comic books, toys or action figures. “ I want people to come in and know that every week there will be something new...that way when they (patrons) come in, they can always explore,” noted Kruger reflectively.

Although comics are his primary focus, Kruger also teaches piano and guitar lessons. He said he uses the store as studio space as well. He wants to concentrate on the store, but he still loves music.

Kruger is planning a big event at Battlestar comics.

On Sept. 30 from 1-8 p.m. actor Butch Patrick, who played Eddie Munster in the popular 1960s TV show “The Munsters”, will be there to take photos and to sign autographs for clientele at no charge.

Battlestar Comics is located at G- 4383 South Saginaw Street in Burton. For more information, call James Kruger 810-341-3331 or visit his Facebook page at www.facebook.com/#!/BattlestarComics.
