Shoplifter rats out companion for drug possession

BURTON — A 31-year-old Columbiaville woman was trying to find a way out of her shoplifting charge when she let police know that the man who was waiting for her in the parking lot was carrying illegal drugs. The woman was in custody for allegedly stealing $181 worth of liquor at the Center Road Meijer when police arrived. Hoping to strike a deal, she said a man in a white Dodge pickup truck had drugs on him. Acting on her tip, police found a truck with a matching description in the parking lot and initiated a traffic stop. After being repeatedly asked where they would find the drugs, the 35- year-old Burton man admitted that crack cocaine was in the center console of his truck. After a patdown, police found crack rocks in his coat pocket in addition to a large amount of crack cocaine in the truck. It was discovered that he had three other felony drug charges in Lapeer County. He was transported to the Burton police station for processing then lodged in Lapeer where he was released pending further investigation. Police are awaiting lab results of the crack cocaine and intend to issue a warrant for possession with intent to deliver. The woman was still issued an appearance ticket.
