Former Lady Soldier a hit with Lady Cougars

SPRING ARBOR — Since graduating from Genesee Christian in 2008, Megan Bement has been tripping the light fantastic with the women’s basketball team at Spring Arbor University, where she was averaging 4.25 points a game as of Jan. 26 in her second season with the team. Highlights this year for Bement include a career-high 11 point, five steal performance Jan. 16 against Penn State Greater Allegheny, on Jan. 23 she scored seven with a rebound and an assist in a 48-79 loss to Marian University, and on Jan. 9 the former Lady Soldier hit for 10 points while going 4-for-6 from the floor in a 52-66 defeat to Grace College.

As a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Spring Arbor is 3-17 overall, 1-8 Mid Central College Conference this year after losing to the University of St. Francis, 37-80 ,on Jan. 27. Next up for the Lady Cougars was a game at Bethel yesterday and Saturday the team hosts Indiana Wesleyan.

Last year as a freshman, Bement managed to get in on 21 games for Spring Arbor, including an eight point, four rebound showing Jan. 17, 2009, against Rochester and Jan. 9 the guard/forward posted three steals and three assists against Concordia. While basketball kept her from competing during the indoor campaign, Bement also ran for the Lady Cougars outdoor track and field team last season.

Bement, who stands in at 5-foot-10, amassed a myriad of accolades and honors while at Genesee Christian, including the school’s single season and career scoring marks at 465 and 1,271 points, respectively. The elementary education/math and language arts major also earned First Team Class D All-State designations in 2006 and 2008 on the road to three district championships and team MVP acknowledgments.

Bement was quite the volleyball player for the Lady Soldiers, as well, twice being named both team captain and MVP while leading the squad to its first ever regional championship in 2007. — M.S.
