Hurley completes trans fat elimination FLINT — Hurley Medical Center has successfully eliminated industrial trans fats from its food service programs as part of a statewide initiative to improve patient and community health. Hurley has accomplished a goal to remove industrial trans fats from all of the food prepared in its hospital cafeteria and patient nutrition programs. “At Hurley, we strive to provide the safest, highest quality care to all who walk through our doors,” said Joanne Whitlatch, Director, Nutrition Services at Hurley Medical Center. Industrial trans fats are linked to negative health effects such as increased levels of bad cholesterol and reduced levels of good cholesterol. In response to this trend, Hurley Medical Center participated in a Michigan Health & Hospital Association statewide campaign to voluntarily eliminate industrial trans fats from our cafeteria and patient nutrition programs by Jan. 1, 2010. — G.G. |
